An annual exam is not exactly what I would call fun, but the staff of the Midwife Center does its best to make the experience as pleasant as possible. Every midwife I have seen has been incredibly friendly and thoroughly informative, but I am a fan of Jatolla in particular - she excels at disseminating knowledge in a way that is accessible and empowering and at encouraging your progress no matter where you are on your journey to your best health. Although I do not plan to have children, I do plan to continue visiting the Midwife Center for my health needs.
Poor treatment from the "director'. I am now working with Jefferson Hospitals / Allegheny Health Network midwives. They are so much nicer, delivery will be in one of their new units. And best of all, they are not in cohoots with UPMC.
The lack of education in this place is totally unacceptable. Stick to a doctor who is actually educated on the subject of child birth and complications.
Both of my children were born at the Midwife Center. Every time I had an appointment I found the midwives and staff to be helpful, knowledgeable, and empathetic.
They got 2 stars, one for their very nice nurse, Cheryl, and the other for their rooms, which are beautiful and relaxing. But the director made it impossible to decide if I wanted to give them $1000 a month for the next 7 months and whether or not I felt comfortable signing the payment agreement before I could be seen. When I explained my anxiety with doctors due to multiple past horrific situations of being mistreated due to lack of proper diagnosis, she didn't seem to care. I was trying to get insurance and she said beforehand she said she hoped I had been seeing someone else. Clearly my trust, stress and anxiety didn't mean much to her. Then to be considered on the sliding scale based on income, as they claim to accommodate all people, I had to bring proof of state insurance denial.. do you have any idea how long it takes for that? Where am I supposed to come up with 2 grand to give you before I can be seen?? After 5 weeks of back and forth and having my questions dodged, I looked elsewhere. I am currently seeking help at AHN Midwives program and they are making it quite easy.
